Projected 2020 College Football Playoff Top 25 rankings for Week 14
By Zach Bigalke
Iowa has received a ton of love from the various computers that used to comprise part of the BCS rankings. The College Football Playoff selection committee also proved hot on the Hawkeyes when they included them in the first set of Top 25 rankings at No. 24. Kirk Ferentz’s team repaid the committee for its confidence with a 26-20 home victory over Nebraska on Black Friday that improved their record to 4-2 and kept them in contention for a possible New Year’s Six bid.
Against the Cornhuskers, Spencer Petras threw for 193 yards with a touchdown and an interception on 18-of-30 passing. Tyler Goodson ran for 111 yards on 30 carries, while Mekhi Sargent punched in a short touchdown with his limited carries. The defense gave up 338 yards to Nebraska but benefitted from two Cornhusker fumbles, one on a punt return and the other on the visitors’ final drive of the game.
Iowa lost the tiebreaker to Northwestern and has no chance to reach the Big Ten championship game at this point. If the Hawkeyes win out in their final two regular-season games against Illinois and Wisconsin and then defeat the second-best team in the East (probably Indiana), they would have a real shot at landing an at-large bid to a New Year’s Six game or at least a New Year’s Day bowl.
