3. Vanderbilt makes history but gets shut out by Missouri

The Vanderbilt Commodores were making history by playing the first female in a Power Five game in college football history. They brought in Sarah Fuller, the goalkeeper of their SEC championship team, to be their kicker after winning the title six days prior. This created huge storylines and an opportunity for Fuller and the Commodores despite having a terrible season.

The Commodores went into this matchup against a mid-level SEC East team in Missouri and laid a complete egg with a 41-0 loss. Statistically, this was one of the most mismatched Power Five games. The Commodores were only able to total 185 total yards and 13 first downs while allowing 603 total yards and 31 first downs.

This was a game that the coaching staff of the Commodores, specifically head coach Derek Mason, failed to spot an edge in the game to give them some momentum. The program decided that enough was enough with multiple underwhelming seasons under Mason. He was fired as a result of this disastrous game against Missouri. In the seven years of Mason as the head coach, the Commodores had only a 27-55 record.

The Commodores have been to two bowl games under Mason with both of them resulting in losses. That tough loss to the Missouri Tigers in an embarrassing fashion was the straw that broke the camel’s back as the Commodores will be having to completely rebuild their program — again.
