Projected 2020 College Football Playoff Top 25 rankings for Week 15
By Zach Bigalke
Iowa State locked down their place in the Big 12 title game with a 42-6 dismantling of West Virginia at Jack Trice Stadium on Saturday. The Cyclones convincingly earned their eighth win of the season and also ensured that they will go into the conference championship with an outside shot to land in the College Football Playoff if they take down Oklahoma. Look for Matt Campbell’s team to leap ahead of Georgia after such a convincing performance.
Brock Purdy was nearly perfect, completing 20 of his 23 passes for 247 yards and three touchdowns. Purdy was one of three Cyclones to rush for a score, with Breece Hall and Kene Nwangwu also punching the ball across the goal line. It was a balanced offensive performance that racked up 483 total yards on the West Virginia defense. In the other direction, Iowa State’s defense held the Mountaineers to 263 total yards and only lost the shutout to a pair of Tyler Sumpter field goals.
Iowa State gets Week 15 off ahead of the Big 12 championship game, while Oklahoma still has to play West Virginia in their own regular-season finale. If the Cyclones secure a second win over the Sooners this season, and depending on what happens elsewhere around the country, the committee will look long and hard at whether they deserve a spot among the final four.
