San Jose State is going to enter the College Football Playoff selection committee’s Top 25 this week as the top threat in the Mountain West to compete for the Group of Five’s spot in the New Year’s Six. The Spartans went to Hawaii and took down the Rainbow Warriors 35-24 on Saturday to improve to 5-0, putting them one win closer to locking down a spot in the conference championship game.

Tyler Nevens put up huge numbers on the ground, racking up 152 yards and two scores on just 16 carries. Nevens was joined in triple digits by Kairee Robinson, who ran the ball 17 times for 111 rushing yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Nick Starkel completed fewer than half of his passes, throwing for 167 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. San Jose State’s defense held Hawaii to only 101 rushing yards and picked off Chevan Cordeiro once.

San Jose State has a winner-take-all game against Nevada lined up in Week 15. If the Spartans win, they will likely be squared up against Boise State in the Mountain West title game. Given the position of the AAC and Sun Belt leaders, a New Year’s Six spot is still a longshot. But Marshall’s loss is San Jose State’s gain if the Spartans can win out.
