Takeaways for Auburn

The Tigers’ passing game has to be a concern for head coach Gus Malzahn. Both of their 20-plus yard receptions were mid-range throws with yards after the catch. The Tigers did not threaten the Aggies’ defense downfield at all. With two receivers like Williams and Schwartz, it is surprising the Tigers do not good downfield more often.

The rush defense is of some concern as well. The Aggies had two running backs with nearly 100 yards each. Devon Achane was one yard from 100. Fisher’s use of Kellen Mond in the running game seemed to affect the Tigers’ defensively. It was obvious, however, the Aggies were able to take advantage of their veteran offensive line.

Takeaways for Texas A&M

Head coach Jimbo Fisher has to be happy with Kellen Mond’s progress this season. The senior quarterback has shown increased awareness and much better decision making skills. In today’s game, Mond made key throws and runs to give his team the lead and keep them ahead.

The defense struggled against the run at times but did a great job against Bo Nix and the Tigers’ offense. Nix seemed to scramble on nearly every drop back and the Aggies defense limited the Tigers pass game. Part of their defense was possessing the ball 16 more minutes than the Tigers.
