New Year’s Six Watch: Chanticleers defeat Cougars, Herd upended
By Dante Pryor
No. 18 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (10-0)
Keeping with the theme of teams who were never supposed to contend in their conferences, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers are undefeated and on a collision course to play the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns for the conference title. The Chants were picked to finish last by many publications at the start of the season.
Not only is Coastal not last, but they are also in a position to garner a New Year’s Six Bowl game. Freshman quarterback Grayson McCall is a star in the making and the “Black Swarm” defense is the real deal. Coastal defeated Louisiana and Appalachian State for their place in the Sun Belt championship game and defeated BYU to keep their New Year’s Six hopes alive.
The Chanticleers would need absolute anarchy and bedlam to have any shot at the College Football Playoff. That was never an argument anyway. What Coastal has the best opportunity for is a New Year’s Six bowl game. Coastal needs to win its season finale against Troy then defeat Louisiana in the title game.
That will not be an easy feat. Louisiana and Coastal played a back and forth in their first matchup and it would not be a huge upset if the Cajuns came away with the victory.
