Iowa football made a statement Saturday with its sixth-straight win thanks to a 21-point smackdown of Wisconsin.

On the pregame show leading up to Iowa football and Wisconsin Saturday, Urban Meyer said he thought the Hawkeyes might be the second-best team in the Big Ten.

And after a 28-7 dismantling of Wisconsin, Iowa football didn’t do anything to disprove that notion.

Both teams had a tough time finding the scoreboard early, but the Iowa defense suffocated the Badgers and made things very tough on Graham Mertz.

With the win, Iowa has won six straight and will have one more game next week, which has been rumored to possibly be against Michigan, assuming the Wolverines can play, although that’s completely against what the Big Ten laid out.

I’d love to see Indiana vs Iowa — for a New Year’s Six game but that’s just me. At any rate, here are three takeaways from the Hawkeyes 21-point win.

Spencer Petras is hitting his stride

Don’t look now but the Hawkeyes suddenly have another solid quarterback. Over the past two weeks, Spencer Petras has thrown five touchdown passes and zero interceptions.

He was far from perfect Saturday, but he completed 14-of-25 passes for 211 yards and two touchdowns. It was a solid day all around but it was one you could see coming.

Over his last four games, Petras has thrown just one interception and with the way Iowa runs the football and plays defense, that makes the Hawkeyes very tough to beat.

This matchup was really about two teams that are similar across the board. Both had a young, talented quarterback and Iowa’s simply played better.
