1. A bowl game is essentially locked up for one of these teams

The regular season is now wrapped up for both of these teams. A new bowl season lies ahead, but the uncertainty stays.

San Diego State has a chance at making a bowl appearance, as they currently slot as the fourth team in the Mountain West Conference. However, two bowl games in which the MWC has ties with (LA Bowl and Hawaii Bowl) have been cancelled.

This now just leaves four games in which the MWC has strong ties to. San Diego State is a strong contender to see a bowl game due to finishing within the top four of the MWC. Any more cancellations will put their bowl hopes in serious jeopardy.

For BYU, it is a disappointment as just two weeks ago we were talking about their path to a New Year’s Six Bowl. At this point, it is very unlikely they can get maximum chaos to put them in that position.

But, currently as the No. 14 ranked team they are a lock for a bowl game that has relevancy. BYU does have the option to participate in the Cheez-It Bowl if a Big Ten or Big 12 team was not eligible. That may be their best bet to get a marquee game against a team such as Oklahoma State.

The official bowl season projections that were released on Nov. 27, had BYU going to the Birmingham Bowl to play Tulsa. Now, the Birmingham Bowl is not looked at as must-see TV, but the matchup against Tulsa could be interesting as they are also currently ranked.

Both of these teams will have an opportunity to rest and regroup as the next decisions are made in this chaotic 2020 season.
