Baylor Football: 3 early 2021 signees who’ll have instant impacts
By Andrew Tineo
The quarterback room has one name around it, ever since Matt Rhule took the head coaching job in 2017. Charlie Brewer, the four year starter that has had a stellar career at Baylor, announced he would enter the transfer portal.
With that being announced, the quarterback room becomes really young and unproven.
In some ways that can be dangerous. However, for the four-star recruit, this could be a golden opportunity to come in and play right away for the Bears. Between the three quarterbacks in front of him, only Jacob Zeno and Gerry Bohannon have touchdowns. He and Zeno both only have one passing touchdown in their careers. Drones was ranked the No. 7 dual-threat in the class and put up historic numbers in 2019.
Drones led Shadow Creek to a state championship in Texas in 2019. His main target from that team was Baylor signee Seth Jones who will be a freshman next year and a familiar face for Drones to potentially throw to.
Standing at 6-foot-2 and 195 pounds, Drones has decent height and shows bursts of being a capable runner. He has a big arm, as he threw for 3,402 yards and 46 touchdowns. He also rushed for 825 yards and 18 touchdowns as a junior.
Drones accuracy has come into question and seems to be one of his negatives in high school. Accuracy can be taught and is a hurdle, Drones could very well overcome. He has better running ability and flashes the big arm that Zeno did, especially during the 2019 Big 12 title game against Oklahoma.
With Brewer leaving and the uncertainty of Bohannon, there could very well be a freshman under center for the Bears. It leaves excitement for the raw potential. Also leaves an open window for Drones to come in, win the job and start as a freshman at a Power Five school.
