College Football Recruiting: 3 biggest winners from 2021 Early Signing Period
By Dante Pryor
3. USC Trojans
Clay Helton needed a win. The Trojans are undefeated in this truncated season, and all anyone can talk about is how they won. The Trojans have had two marginal recruiting classes (No. 20 and No. 64) the last two seasons. This season, USC’s class is ranked 13th, but it’s about two things: making up for a past mistake and getting good players from outside the footprint.
When Sam Darnold bolted early for the NFL, it was clear that Helton and the Trojans did not have anyone ready to take the helm of the offense. True freshman JT Daniels — who reclassified — was put in to lead the offense. Though Daniels played admirably, it was obvious he was not ready.
Helton sees the possibility that next season could be the last for sophomore quarterback Kedon Slovis and got not one but two quarterbacks. Both Miller Moss and Jaxon Dart are four-stars who should be prepared to compete for the starting job after Slovis leaves.
Helton and the Trojans have seen the need to get into the national recruiting game. USC got a three-star defensive end, Colin Mobley, from De Matha High School in Maryland. Mobley is a raw athlete with room to grow. Also, the Trojans picked up four solid players from Texas, including four-star running back Brandon Campbell.
