The cancellation of the Sun Belt championship game was due to issues with a position group on Coastal Carolina’s roster, not to any issues on Louisiana’s team. That won’t matter to the College Football Playoff selection committee, which could actually move down a spot in the final Top 25. The committee has been unkind to Group of Five teams sidelined by coronavirus issues when “other teams around them have been playing and have been adding to their resume.”

Look for that logic to hold firm with the selection committee this week, even though everyone else around Louisiana has already completed their regular seasons and had no further data points to offer. The Ragin’ Cajuns missed a prime opportunity to make a final statement against a Chanticleers team that dealt Louisiana its only narrow loss of the season.

A New Year’s Six bid might have been in reach; now Billy Napier’s team must prepare for whatever bowl scraps they can scrounge up this year. For a team who can boast a Top 25 victory out of conference, on the road, against a team that entered championship weekend ranked 13 spots higher despite possessing an additional loss, Louisiana has every reason to be frustrated by the way their season concluded.
