Arizona Football: The pros and cons of hiring Jedd Fisch
The cons
One red flag to me is that since 2007, Fisch hasn’t stayed in one job or at one place for more than two seasons. I understand not holding the same position necessarily and assistant coaches obviously move around a lot, but that’s a bit too much for my taste.
Fisch did spend four seasons in Baltimore and he’s been the quarterbacks coach/offensive coordinator in seven different places.
Fisch’s name has been on the rise, there’s no doubt about that but he’s coached exactly two games as a head coach and that was as the interim guy at UCLA after the head coach was fired.
Brennan’s record at San Jose State wasn’t out of this world and in his first two years, he won just three games. But over the past two seasons, he went 12-5 and won a championship. He also did it as a first-time coach but had a prior history as an assistant with the Spartans.
Fisch doesn’t have a connection to Arizona and he also doesn’t have head-coaching experience, so really the biggest reason he’s a candidate is the president knows him well. That has caused an angry response from fans which doesn’t help and he needs to build support quickly.
Not with fans necessarily, they will come around if the results follow, but within the program and those around it, Fisch has to prove he’s up to the job and building a solid staff is essential.
Brennan also proves that a first-time head coach can be successful and if Arizona football is right about hiring Fisch, it will have the young hot-shot coach it wants.
The problem is that if that happens, Arizona football likely won’t benefit a ton, because based on his history, Fisch will take the first job he sees as an upgrade.
So whether he gets fired or hired somewhere else, he’s not going to be Arizona football coach for more than a few years.
