College Football Rankings 2020: Projected AP Top 25 final rankings
By Zach Bigalke
Up 21-10 in the fourth quarter against Georgia, Cincinnati blew any chance it had to claim a share of the national championship as they collapsed to a 24-21 defeat at the Peach Bowl. The Bearcats held Georgia to 45 rushing yards as a team, generated two turnovers, and still lost on a 53-yard Jack Podlesny field goal with three seconds remaining. It was a heartbreaker that will send the Bearcats out of the top 10 in the AP Top 25.
Desmond Ridder threw for 206 yards and a pair of touchdowns in defeat, and Jerome Ford contributed 97 rushing yards and a score on the ground. Questionable clock management by Luke Fickell and the Bearcats staff allowed Georgia enough time to complete the comeback, even as Cincinnati enjoyed nearly three more minutes in time of possession. Despite a strong showing against the run, Cincinnati’s defense gave up 392 passing yards to J.T. Daniels in the loss.
Cincinnati broke through to win the American Athletic Conference in 2020, but they proved unable to complete the fairy tale run to a perfect season against an SEC opponent. As a result, pollsters are going to sour on the Bearcats relative to other non-Power Five programs on their final ballots.
