College Football Rankings 2020: Projected AP Top 25 final rankings
By Zach Bigalke
After the 55-20 loss to Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl, Dan Mullen had plenty of excuses for the flat showing by the Gators. Mullen asserted that his team could have canceled the game due to a roster depleted by COVID-19, leading one to wonder why Florida was playing if that was truly the case. Voters won’t buy the excuses as they drop the SEC East champions out of the top 10 and all the way down into the high teens in the final AP Top 25 of the 2020 season.
Kyle Trask looked lost without many of his favorite receivers, throwing three interceptions and finishing with 158 yards on 16-of-28 passing before getting the hook. Florida gained more than 500 yards of offense on Oklahoma, but the Gators defense was even more sieve-like as they coughed up nearly 700 total yards to the Sooners in the five-touchdown blowout. With four losses, the Gators will be lucky to remain in the top 20.
From a College Football Playoff hopeful to an afterthought in the span of two games, Florida faded fast in 2020. Given Mullen’s heel turn on the sidelines this season, his litany of excuses after every loss, and his cavalier attitude to player safety and public health during a pandemic, should Gator fans start wondering whether the former Mississippi State coach is the right man to lead Florida back to the promised land of national championship contention?
