A Notre Dame kind of QB

Notre Dame football has built an identity under Brian Kelly and on the offensive side of the ball, much of that has to do with success in the trenches.

While Book was solid at quarterback this past season for the Irish, he wasn’t the star of the offense. That was sophomore running back Kyren Williams, who racked up nearly 1,500 total yards from scrimmage and scored 14 touchdowns. He also averaged 5.4 yards per attempt.

The Irish have another solid running back in Chris Tyree. Notre Dame is losing four all-conference lineman in the ACC but it also has an elite offensive line class in terms of recruiting, so the ground game should be fine.

And that’s where Coan comes in. He will fit perfect in that kind of system and he flourishes throwing the ball 20-25 times. He’s not super athletic, but he excels in the play-action passing game and can push the ball down the field.

Coan isn’t a superstar and neither was Book. But with a solid ground game, Coan can manage the game and makes the plays needed to win.

He did that at Wisconsin and although he was 1-4 in games where he attempted more than 30 passes, he’s great for the kind of football Notre Dame wants to play.
