16. Wisconsin Badgers – Bucky Badger

Bucky Badger was a member of the inaugural mascot hall of fame class in 2006, so this is more than just a person in a costume, this is serious mascot stuff. The Badger mascot first appeared in print in the 1930s and was an instant hit.

But after a real-life badger proved to be too vicious to have near a football field, the school adopted the costumed version in the 40s and the rest is mascot history. The full name is Buckingham U. Badger but friends call him Bucky.

Although Bucky didn’t always play nice, often engaging in playful fighting with rival mascots, including Minnesota’s Goldy. Who would have thought that badgers and gophers couldn’t get along?
