West Virginia Football: 3 most important newcomers for 2021 season
By Phil Poling
Finding a quarterback for Dana Holgorsen was a difficult task at West Virginia. He inherited Geno Smith. Then he bounced between transfers Clint Trickett and Skyler Howard for a few seasons before Will Grier joined the program. After that, Jack Allison, Austin Kendall, and Jarret Doege — three more transfers — were the best options.
Finding a high school quarterback to groom and eventually lead the program was hard for the previous regime; Brown might’ve landed his in just his second full recruiting cycle.
Will Crowder, known as “Goose” to some, is a three-star recruit, per 247Sports. He received scholarship offers from Boise State, Georgia Tech, Iowa State, Kentucky and Virginia Tech, among others, but ultimately chose the Mountaineers. He’s enrolled for the spring semester in Morgantown.
With questions surrounding the starting quarterback position following their bowl victory — you might remember Jarret Doege being pulled in favor of Austin Kendall — Crowder could get an opportunity to impress the WVU coaching staff this spring and through the summer. It doesn’t seem like a matter of “if” he’ll be the eventual starter of the Mountaineers, it’s more a question of “when?”
