SEC Football history: 50 best players of all time
By Brad Weiss
1. Best SEC football players of all time: Herschel Walker, Georgia football
When it comes to college football and the illustrious history of the sport, one man is widely considered the best to ever do it. That man just happened to play in the SEC, so when creating our list of the top-50 players in the history of SEC Football, we started with No. 1, Herschel Walker, and worked out way down to No. 50.
A product of Johnson County (GA) High School, Walker arrived with the Bulldogs and got right to work, becoming the first true freshman to be named an All-American. In his first season on campus, he led Georgia to a national title, setting the stage for what would turn out to be the most dominant career the SEC, and possibly the NCAA had ever seen.
A three-time SEC Player of the Year, Walker racked up over 5,200 rushing yards during his three seasons with the Bulldogs and was a Heisman finalist every year, the only player in college football history to accomplish that at the time. He won the Heisman in 1982, capping off a career that saw him also take home the Maxwell and Walter Camp Award in his final season at Georgia.
Walker was a three-time All-American for the Bulldogs, racked up 76 touchdowns in his career, and was rightfully inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. His No. 34 was also retired by the school, and while he did not have the success most expected from him at the professional level, he is the unquestioned best player in the history of SEC Football, and rightfully takes his spot atop our list.
