1. Who replaces Ian Book at quarterback?

The short answer is Wisconsin transfer Jack Coan. The former Badger signal-caller has played in some big games during his career and has thrived in a run-oriented offense while in Madison. Coan is a leader who throws with anticipation and accuracy.

Is he the game-changing quarterback the Irish are looking for? Probably not. Coan does not possess elite tools. He does not have an arm that can take the top off of a defense.

Coan is a typical statue-like pocket passer that does not run. His lack of mobility limits the playbook. Also, Coan is not a playmaker when a play breaks down. If the pocket is steady and the running game is going, he can light up a defense. Can Coan hold down the offense for a season and win 10 games while Tyler Buchner gets some seasoning? Absolutely.

The biggest question for the quarterback position is whether or not the offensive staff and Brian Kelly feel that Buchner is ready when the season starts. There is going to be competition for QB1 this offseason. If Buchner wins, Coan is a solid second option. If Coan wins, Buchner can get valuable reps and be ready for the 2022 season.
