Transfer portal talk and Deion Sanders’ coaching debut: A Blitz Podcast
By Zach Bigalke
This week’s podcast dives into the challenges of entering the transfer portal during a pandemic, then evaluates the first game for Deion Sanders as a coach.
Most of us will deal with the challenges of moving at some point in our lives. Sometimes it is as simple as getting out of our childhood home and going off to college. Eventually we might buy a home of our own. Perhaps we pack up and trek to a new job in another state. Humans are a locomotor species by design, and the transfer portal in college football is just the latest evidence of our mobility.
What unique challenges come from leaving one program and seeking out another during the COVID-19 pandemic? When the game of musical chairs stops at the end of this offseason cycle, will more athletes than usual be left without a place to sit?
We pick up those questions in the first segment of this week’s Saturday Blitz Podcast. In the second segment, we turn our attention toward Deion Sanders. A legend as a player, Sanders now seeks to build a new legacy as the leader of an HBCU program.
Things started well enough for Sanders in his debut, a 53-0 whitewash of overmatched NAIA opponent Edward Waters. After the game, the spotlight turned back on Neon Deion after his personal belongings were apparently rifled through in the coach’s office. It tempered the excitement of a decisive shutout, but what can we take away from a shutout victory in what amounts to the FCS equivalent of a paycheck game?
This week’s show wraps up with a little snark about the only FBS team playing this spring. Listen directly through the player above or click through to download to your favorite device.
