Big 12 Football: 50 best players of all-time
By Randy Gurzi
Big 12 Football best players of all-time: 30. Nathan Vasher, DB, Texas football
Nathan Vasher was a very good cornerback for the Texas Longhorns from 2000-2003. He could do everything that was asked of him but there was one area where he stood out — Vasher was a ball hawk. During his four-year career, Casher intercepted 17 passes and broke up 64 passes. He’s tied for the school record in interceptions (a record that had been there since 1941) and during his time in the Big 12, there was no one else creating picks at the rate he was (he also intercepted all of those passes in a three-year span from 2001-2003).
His first season as a full-time starter was in 2001 and the sophomore had seven picks. He followed that up with four in 2002 and another six during his senior campaign. If that wasn’t enough, he was also a weapon in the return game.
Vasher ran back 94 punts for Texas and had 1,314 yards and two touchdowns. He averaged 14 yards per return and ended up being recognized as a Second-Team All-Big 12 player twice, once on the First-Team and once as an All-American.
Following his career, Vasher was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the fourth round and played in the NFL from 2004 through 2010 — he even made the Pro Bowl in 2005 and finished with 20 career picks.
Fun fact: His nephew T.J. Vasher was a star receiver for Texas Tech and entered the 2021 NFL Draft.
