College football: 30 best college quarterbacks of all-time
30 best college football quarterbacks of all-time: 20. Roger Staubach, Navy football
Career stats:
- 3,799 passing yards
- 63.6 completion percentage
- 18 TDs
In terms of raw numbers, there isn’t a single person on this list who has worse statistics than Roger Staubach. There’s really no other way to say it, they were just bad.
But even while they weren’t eye-popping, when compared to the rest of his peers from the 1960s, they stack up quite well.
For his career, Staubach only threw for a total of 3,799 yards at Navy. Nowadays, players are blowing past that number in a single season. In his best year, he only managed to throw for 1,702 yards.
Also, in totality, Staubach actually threw the ball to the other team more times in the end zone with 20, then his own team with 18. In his first official game, Staubach went 0-2 and hit the dirt on multiple occasions due to relentless sacks from the opposing team.
But still, once Staubach got his mojo going, he was impressive. In his 1963 season, Staubach led his Navy team to a record of 9-1 while finishing the season ranked number two. He would also beat out every other candidate for the Heisman trophy as well.
Although he would dominate that year, his team would come up short in the National Championship game against the University of Texas. Nevertheless, Staubach was a winner and a great player in college. Even if his stats say otherwise.
