30 best college football quarterbacks of all-time: 11. Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma football

College stats:

  • 14,607 passing yards
  • 119 TDs
  • 21 INTs
  • 68.5 completion percentage

There are people who are confident and then there’s Baker Mayfield. The two are not the same.

Mayfield essentially willed himself onto this list. It’s seldom that someone fresh off the street not only walks onto a college football field but actually plays.

In his case, he did it twice. He tore defenses up the moment he got his chance. His first year ended with the Big 12 Conference Freshman Offensive Player of the Year Award. Instead of trying to build on that success in Texas Tech, Mayfield packed up his bags and headed to Oklahoma.

Walking on may have worked once but twice was thought to be virtually impossible. For Mayfield however, any dubious remarks about his abilities have always fueled him. That in turn led him to not only making the Oklahoma Sooners squad but becoming their starter. He may have sat out his first year due to ineligibility issues but once he got going, he never threw for less than 3,700 yards. Throwing double-digit picks was virtually impossible for him as he never did it.

His 68.5 completion percentage for his career ranks 11th all-time, proving that once dropped back, a completion was virtually guaranteed. It wasn’t only just the stats for Mayfield but it was also the winning he did while out on the field. He led Oklahoma to the Big 12 Championship in 2017 and dragged his team to the College Football Playoffs.

Mayfield took home a ton of awards during his tenure in college including the Maxwell and Heisman trophy. Mayfield’s stats alone warrant him being on this list but becoming the first player in college history to walk onto two separate high-powered division one schools and becoming their starter is probably his most impressive feat of them all.
