Cam Newton was a flat out headache on the field for both division one schools and at the JUCO level.
When his career first started in 2007, it seemed like he wouldn’t amount to much of anything. Newton began as the primary backup to Tim Tebow. Playing time, of course, came at a premium for Newton. He only complied 40 passing yards in five games played.
Year two was even worst for Newton as he was suspended from the team and shortly after, left all together just three days before they would go on to win the National title. With Newton playing an insignificant role at the time, his departure was inconsequential.
Wanting a fresh start, Newton went the Jr college route and landed at Blinn in Brenham Texas. He immediately proved that he was better than everyone he stepped onto the field against as he threw for 2,833 yards and ran for 655 more. Newton would lead his team to a National title and became the most sought-after Jr college quarterback.
After sifting through countless offers, Newton settled on Auburn and didn’t waste any time in making his mark. It didn’t matter that the defenders he played against were bigger, faster and stronger than the ones he grew accustomed to on the Jr college level, Newton toyed with them. His 2,854 passing yards along with his 30 TDs in the air were very good numbers but when paired with 1,473 rushing yards and 20 scores on the ground, his numbers went from good to ridiculous.
Newton won every award imaginable including the Heisman Trophy. The most impressive feat of his college career was when Newton took home the national title for the Auburn Tigers. It’s one thing to win on the Jr college level but it’s something else entirely to turn right around and get things done on this biggest of stages.
Newton won everywhere he went and did so dominantly. How many other quarterbacks can arrive on multiple college campuses and get the job done each and every time? Only one, and that’s why he’s ranked so highly on our list.
