30 best college football quarterbacks of all-time: 24. Andrew Luck, Stanford football

Career stats:

  • 9,430 passing yards
  • 82 TDs
  • 22 INTs
  • 67 completion percentage

Better than Troy Aikman, better than Jim Kelly and even better than Peyton Manning. According to Mel Kiper, Andrew Luck was better than them all.

Outside of his accuracy issues in year one at Stanford, Luck had an overall very good first year. 2,575 passing yards paired with 13 touchdowns attests to that. He wasn’t spectacular but he was more than capable.

In year two, however, look he made the leap. Luck took home the Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year Award, a 12-1 record and a victory in the Orange Bowl. Defenses were left scratching their heads as they simply couldn’t figure him out. Luck that year threw for 3,338 yards with 32 TDs compared to only eight interceptions. At this point, it was a rarity to see Luck throw the ball and not hit receivers perfectly as he connected on 70.7 percent of his passes.

Despite the prolific numbers, Luck would finish second in the Heisman Trophy race. He would finish second again the very next season as his numbers, believe it or not, took another jump. With that said, not even 3,517 passing yards, 37 TDs to only 10 picks, and a completion percentage of 71.3 were enough to pry the award away from Robert Griffin III.

Yet, with his other litany of awards such as the Maxwell and the Walter Camp Player of the Year, Luck is more than deserving of his placement on his list.

Any other QB who chooses to go to Stanford will have Luck’s shadow cast over them for quite some time as he is the school’s leader in total offense with 10,387, wins with 31 and winning percentage with 81.6. Good luck beating that.
