2. Southern dominated on both sides of the ball

The Southern Jaguars and head coach Dawson Odoms know who they are offensively, and it all starts with the running game. Led by Ledarius’ Skelton’s 76 yards, the Jaguars ran for 232 yards and six touchdowns.

The passing game was not to be outdone, however. Southern found big plays downfield as a result of Grambling trying to stop Southern’s rushing attack. Five receivers averaged over 20 yards per reception for Southern.

The positive for the Jaguars’ passing game was zero interceptions and a 75 percent completion percentage. Not only was Southern able to push the ball downfield, but they also did it at efficiently and accurately.

The defense was not to be outdone. The Jags defense gave up just seven points and just 208 total yards. Grambling State was going to struggle offensively because of their issues with COVID and unrest on the staff, but Southern took full advantage.

The Jags defensive line was stout against the Grambling offensive line with five sacks and six tackles for loss. Grambling could not sustain drives well enough even to try to play field position against Southern.

Southern’s performance in this game was full of their identity under head coach Dawson Odoms, a diverse run game with a relentless pass rush with a great defensive line.
