Considering the past decade that has been Kansas football, it makes Todd Reesing’s tenure at Kansas that more impressive. After serving as the backup for his freshman season, Reesing sent the Jayhawks into a completely different vortex.

It wasn’t until his sophomore season, where Reesing got more recognition and became the opening day starter. Although Kansas was coming off back-to-back seasons finishing in the middle of the Big 12, the trajectory of the program was aiming in the right direction.

Not many college football fans expected a season as special as 2007. Kansas was a Buzzsaw through the first four games, dismantling far inferrior opponents, behind an offense that scored in bunches. The Jayhawks out-scored their non-conference opponents 214-23. To put that into comparison, Kansas scored 142 points, all of the 2020 season.

Reesing was a big part, with easily scoring on the opponents. Kansas’ first conference game was the Sunflower Showdown with Kansas State.

In Manhattan, Reesing was able to lead a fourth quarter drive and a throw to Dexter Fields that would give the Jayhawks the lead and preserve a huge rivalry win over the No. 24 team in the country.

Through some up and down performances, Kansas would stay undefeated, leading up to the de-facto Big 12 North Championship game against Missouri. It wasn’t Reesing’s finest performance as although he threw for 349 yards, he also had two interceptions and a safety that capped off the chance at a Big 12 and national title appearance.

Kansas was able to end the season on a high note with a win, fighting off Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl.

Although Reesing found success in 2008 and 2009, the team, however, could not. The Jayhawks went 8-5 the following season and missed out on a bowl game the following year.

Reesing has a ton of Big 12 records, including seventh in pass completions, as well as, tenth in passing yards and passing touchdowns. Kansas has been able to muster 21 wins since Reesing left the program, back in 2009. It makes Reesing that much more of a campus legend.
