One of nation’s best offenses expects more of the same in 2021

North Texas ranked eighth in total offense during 2020 and finished top twenty-five in most categories. Their best player last season was wide receiver Jaelon Darden and he was drafted this past April, but the loss of Darden should not slow the offense enough to where they slide back.

Quarterback Austin Aune returns to lead the Mean Green’s attack and he had a really solid season in 2020. Aune threw for nearly 1700 yards and 13 touchdowns with only four interceptions. Aune really grew up during last season and I think that he has the potential to be one of the better quarterbacks in the conference and he is a player to keep an eye on for this season.

The running game should be solid behind DeAndre Torrey. Torrey had a really good season, rushing for 656 yards and six touchdowns. Torrey has the potential to lead the team in rushing but Oscar Adaway III is also there in the backfield and they will form one of the top backfield tandems in the conference. The running game will be the strength of the offense in 2021.

The wide receiving corps will be missing Darden, but young and capable guys are ready to step in and contribute. Deonte Simpson was the second leading receiver on the team last season and he should be able to step in and pick up as the number one receiver.

Lorenzo Thompson and Khatib Lyles are the other guys to watch catching the football for the Mean Green. The offensive line was really good last season and returns four of the five starters up front, which should solidify the running offense. Expect another top twenty-five offense for the Mean Green in 2021.
