South Florida defense has as many questions to answer as offense

There is going to be a lot of turnover on the defense, but that might not be a bad thing, considering the Bulls gave up nearly 40 points per game last season. South Florida football is going to rely on transfers, especially in the secondary, to help fix one of the worst defenses in the country.

On the defensive line, the only veteran returning will be Thad Mangum, a senior defensive tackle. Mangum was a solid presence for the Bulls up front last season. Keep an eye out for Darrien Grant and Kelvin Pinkney to join Mangum upfront. The linebacking corps is going to be where the most starting experience lies with Antonio Greer and Dwayne Boyles back. Greer and Boyles were the top two tacklers on the team last fall and they will be looking to lead the defense this season.

The secondary is going to be defined by several transfers coming into the program. TJ Robinson, who is transferring in from Rutgers is going to be one of the starters at safety and Will Jones II, who is transferring in from Kansas State is going to be looking for a spot as well.

Matthew Hill, an Auburn transfer is among the others vying for playing time. Daquan Evans, who led the team in interceptions with three, is back at corner and he should be the leader in the secondary.

The defense is going to have a lot of new faces, but that might be for the best considering how bad the defense was in 2020.
