College football: 25 biggest what-ifs of the 2010s
College football: 2010s biggest what-ifs: 7. TCU finally catches a break
TCU got a raw deal in 2014. The year prior, they are flat-out horrific. They finished the season 4-8 and were generally the laughing stocks of the college football world. With that said, they hit a switch in 2014. The TCU Horned Frogs were dominating all year long, they completed their remarkable turnaround by going 12-1 during the regular season.
All signs pointed to the Horned Frogs making their first College Football Playoffs. They ranked as high as number three in the country but were up against a terrible flaw in the system. During championship weekend, TCU didn’t have a championship game to play. Ohio State, on the other hand, took on Wisconsin for all of the Big Ten marbles. They would end up destroying Wisconsin and effectively, knocked TCU down a few pegs.
What resulted from TCU’s downgrade was a National Championship for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Needless to say, the 2014 champs would have been someone completely different had the selection committee kept Ohio State out of the loop. The win for the Buckeyes also elevated the status of head coach Urban Meyer. And while we’re not saying that he wouldn’t have been considered an all-time great coach without that National Championship win in 2014, what we are saying, is that his status amongst his fellow great coaching peers would be severely diminished.
