College football: 2010s biggest what-ifs: 23. No miracle for Florida

In hindsight, none of it really mattered.

Like any season, every school believes they have a chance to do magical things. Reality hasn’t set in yet and full-on delusion has prominent. For Tennessee, they believed they could do a few things. Their thought process was understandable.

In the first game of the year, they fought back against a solid Georgia Tech team to win in double overtime. They followed that up by blowing the doors off Indiana State. As Florida popped up on their schedule, Tennessee was hoping to keep the winning train going. They almost did, yet, it wasn’t meant to be.

Tied at 20 with less than 15 seconds left on the clock, Florida quarterback Feleipe Franks launched a prayer down the field that was ultimately answered. After their improbable win, Florida would go on to win only two of their final nine games.

Tennessee, on the other hand, wasn’t much better.

We’re not saying that Tennessee would’ve became title contenders had they pulled off the win against Florida but what if they were able to knock the ball away and win in overtime? Well, they wouldn’t have gone winless in the conference and maybe just maybe, they wouldn’t have finished dead last.
