Who is the QB?

The old saying is if you have two quarterbacks, then you really don’t have one. I don’t think that is true in Miami’s case and the Redhawks have two good quarterbacks that are going to battle it out in the fall for the right to start.

Brett Gabbert should be the favorite to start for the Redhawks, as he had a really good season in 2019, throwing for over 2,400 yards and helping lead Miami to the MAC title. Gabbert was solid in limited action, but because he went down with an injury, it at least opened the door for AJ Mayer to show what he could do and he did just that. Mayer was solid in limited action last fall and at minimum, he gives the Redhawks a solid backup they can depend on if Gabbert gets hurt.

One thing that Miami did not have last season was a dependable running game and that was because both of their backs from 2019 were down with injuries, but they are both back this season.

Jaylon Bester and Tyre Shelton were important parts of the team last season and will provide a boost this season. Another name to keep an eye on in the backfield is Northwestern transfer, Isaiah Bowser.

The receiving corps brings plenty of experience and talent. Jack Sorenson led the team in receiving and can do so again this season and Jalen Walker and Mac Hippenhammer are nice threats as well.

The offensive line is the biggest weakness heading into the season, as the Redhawks only bring back two starters and lost Tommy O’Doyle to the NFL and Danny Godlevske transferred to Oklahoma State. This offense has plenty of playmakers and if the line improves, they will be tough to stop.
