Defense

While the offense had plenty of issues, the defense had problems of its own and ranked worst in the Big Ten in both points and yards allowed.

That’s something that needs to change right away and just like the offense, the cupboard isn’t entirely bare. Jake Hansen is the leading tackler and has been an incredibly productive player over the years for Illinois.

Another positive is the fact that Owen Carney didn’t leave via the transfer portal is expected back for next season after leading the team with five sacks. He also had six tackles for loss.

Calvin Hart is a transfer from North Carolina State that should also help boost the pass rush for the Illini in 2021 and there is also a slew of transfers who should compete for playing time and add depth in the secondary, which was a huge weakness a year ago.

Devon Witherspoon should take a step forward at cornerback after a solid season in 2020 and another name to watch on the defensive line is DT Rodrick Perry, who had two sacks a year ago.
