Tennessee State Football: Can Eddie George win with the Tigers?
By Dante Pryor
There is a lot of work to be done on offense
The offense struggled this past spring scoring 18.4 points per game. The Tigers struggled most in the passing game. TSU quarterbacks combined for just four touchdown passes, completing just 49.2 percent of their passes last season. Opponents threw 11 touchdown passes against the Tigers.
Struggles throwing the football made the Tigers one-dimensional. However, the Tigers averaged just 3.6 yards per carry. TSU only averaged 4.7 yards per play. Sufficed it to say that Tennessee State struggled to move the ball down the field.
Isaiah Green was the primary quarterback this spring with Deveon Bryant getting some playing time as well. Auburn transfer Chayil Garnett should compete for the starting job. Both quarterbacks return with three other quarterbacks, Heath Williams, Edwin Rhodes III, and David Johnson, on the roster.
Despite not throwing the football well last spring, Cam Wyche did average over 20 yards per reception. The running game was the strength of the Tigers’ offense last spring. Memphis transfer Devon Starling was a bright spot, leading TSU in rushing, averaging over six yards per carry.
Offensive coordinator Hugh Jackson has his work cut out for him. The first thing on Jackson’s agenda is hewing out an offensive identity. When that happens, the staff can recruit based on how they want to play offense.
