Unlikely Power 5 conference championship matchups for 2021
By Austin Lloyd
What Power 5 underdog stories might we see come to life in college football this upcoming season?
Power 5 football, despite being CFB’s highest level of strength in the entire sport, is not exactly known for its parity. Because of this, most fans would scoff at the thought of any unfamiliar names battling for a league crown.
However, if college football has taught its viewers anything, it is that just about anything is possible. This opens up an entire discussion topic regarding who all may surprise the nation this Fall.
There is a difference, though, between “possible” and “realistic.” Jay-Z winning the lottery is possible, but the odds of it happening are so slim that it is not even worth using brainpower to think about.
In football terms, that means that I refuse to try and convince anyone that Vanderbilt and Arkansas can/will meet up in the SEC’s title game this season. Instead, the objective here is to humor matchup(s) that could somehow actually take place, even if the ideas of them are farfetched on the surface.
So without further ado, here is an unlikely pairing for every Power 5 title game of the 2021-22 college football season.
Pac-12: Oregon v. Colorado
The Ducks are not particularly hard to imagine in the Pac-12 championship game, but the Buffaloes of Colorado are a different story.
The Buffs have only made one title game since joining the Pac in 2011, and they got crushed in it. But that did not stop them from seeing a 4-0 start last season.
Meanwhile, Oregon–the defending Pac-12 Champ–has had some issues trying to get out from behind the offseason shadow of their divisional rival Washington, who saw a relatively decent 2020 as well.
