Washington State Football: Can defense complement electric offense?
Quarterback remains a question mark
Washington State football has been at the top of the offensive ranking for some time and this season should be no different if they can settle on a quarterback.
Last year’s starter was Jayden de Laura and he had a solid season, throwing for 886 yards and five touchdowns. Being the starter last season in this system should have given a leg up on the competition for de Laura, but after a DUI arrest, his job security is uncertain.
Washington State went out and got Tennessee transfer QB Jarrett Guarantano, who was unspectacular with the Vols and he had an uneven spring. One guy to look out for in this competition might be Cammon Cooper, who has been with the program for a few years and looked solid in the spring. The Cougars must settle on a quarterback if they want to get to a bowl game.
The running might not be the most used thing on offense, but the Cougars have a very underrated tailback in Max Borghi. Borghi was fantastic for Washington State in 2019 but was dinged up in 2020. That gave way to Deon McIntosh, who responded by averaging over 6 yards per carry. This is a good duo in the backfield and Rolovich would be wise to use them often. Watch for Wisconsin transfer Nakia Watson to get some carries as well.
The wide receivers have a chance to be special for the Cougars this season. Travell Harris and Renard Bell are playmakers from the slot position and both guys should thrive this season. Calvin Jackson Jr has promise, but he has not lived up to it thus far. Look out for C.J Moore to make an impact on the outside as well. The offensive line has some standouts back in tackle Abraham Lucas and Brain Greene, who should contend for All-Conference honors.
If the Cougars find a quarterback, this has a chance to be one of the best offenses in the country.
