How will San Jose State football fare in 2021?
After their home opener against Southern Utah, the Spartans travel to Los Angeles to play USC inside the LA Coliseum. Although USC should be the favorites in them, expect San Jose State to keep this game closer than expected.
The next four stretch of games are winnable contests, headlined by Hawaii, New Mexico State, and Colorado State.
The Spartans get San Diego State at home, in hope of beating the Aztecs in San Jose for the first time since 2008. San Jose State beat San Diego State last season, 28-17.
The first intriguing conference matchup is a road game against UNLV which went winless in 2020 and gave 30 points or more in every single game. However, the intrigue from a transfer was announced this offseason. Former Ohio State and Miami quarterback Tate Martell announced recently his decision to come back home and play for UNLV in hopes of being the starting quarterback.
Prior to both being in college, Martell was seen knocking Starkel’s play when he was at Texas A&M and Tate was still in high school.
Nov. 6 is the most critical game of the Spartans’ season, as they travel to Reno to play Carson Strong-led Nevada. The Wolf Pack are picked by many to win the West and tied with San Jose State for the most returning starters of any team in the conference. Although San Diego State will be in the realm, San Jose State vs. Nevada on Nov. 6 will dictate who makes the Mountain West title game.
The defense and running duo of Nevens and Robinson carries the load and does just enough for the Spartans to escape with a win and berth into another Mountain West title game.
This is set to be San Jose State’s best team, since 2012 when the Spartans won 11 games and the Military Bowl.
With a Mountain West title game appearance once again, San Jose State proves they are here to stay in the conference and wins double-digit games in 2021.
Prediction: 10-2, 7-1 Mountain West
