College football thoughts from around the nation: Predictions for 2021
The 2021 college football season officially kicked off Saturday, but a loaded Week 1 starts on Thursday night (technically it started Wednesday with a UAB blowout of Jacksonville State).
- Week zero is officially in the books, and it was just about what we expected. Well, unless you’re Nebraska.
How bad did the Huskers look on Saturday? Nebraska lost to Illinois 30-22 in Champaign in what should be considered an upset, but can’t be called an upset because of the sheer domination the Illini presented.
The scoreboard said this was a one-possession game, but anyone who watched it knows it definitely was not. Despite Illinois quarterback Brandon Peters injuring his shoulder, the Illini offense never missed a beat. Nebraska looked awful on defense, at various points looking like they didn’t even care. Special teams weren’t much better, giving up a safety on a bad punt attempt and missing two extra points.
In other words, the same old Nebraska. This is Frost’s fourth season as head coach of his alma mater and they really haven’t gotten much better in that time. He’s on the hot seat anyways and this abysmal performance won’t help matters at all.
Nebraska just can’t seem to get out of their own way. It’s always something, most of the time self-inflicted. My head almost exploded when Frost said they had to abandon most of their game plan because of how the Illinois defensive front lined up. It was clear they couldn’t make adjustments on the fly which is extremely concerning. Not to bash Illinois, but if Nebraska can’t adjust against the Illini, how are they going to stay remotely competitive against Oklahoma and Ohio State?
If Frost can’t fix Nebraska football, who can? That’s an hours-long debate that’s best served for later in the season.
Now onto some picks.
