6. Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Key returning players: Sam Hartman, Christian Beal-Smith, Ryan Smenda, Jr.

Key losses: Carlos Basham Jr., Sage Surratt

Season Outlook: Last season, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons had another solid season, including a fifth consecutive trip to the postseason. Wake has become a solid mid-tier program under head coach Dave Clawson.

However, when you are the smallest program in the Power 5, depth is a constant concern, and injuries can derail the momentum of an outstanding season. The extra season of eligibility could be a God-send for the Deacons (pun intended) this season.

The Demon Deacons bring back all of an offense that scored 36 points per game last season. Quarterback Sam Hartman is back to run the offense, and slot receiver Jaquarii Robinson averaged 100 yards receiving per game last season.

The defense was the reason the offense had to be so good last season. The defense gave up over 37 points five times last season. One reason is the injuries to the secondary. However, despite surrendering 32.8 points per game, the Demon Deacons did create 17 turnovers.

The defense needs to find someone to step up and replace Carlos “Boogie” Basham and improve the linebacker play. Veteran Ryan Smenda returns, and hopefully, he’s healthy because the Wake Forest defense needs him.

Somehow, the Deacons need to improve the defense to take the pressure off of the offense this season.
