After the first half, it seemed like this was going to be a cakewalk for the Sooners. Oklahoma football’s defense did a great job of creating headaches in the first half with three sacks and three turnovers on their way to a 37-14 lead.

In the second half, they looked as if they fell asleep at the wheel because Tulane would outscore the Sooners 21-3 during this time.

Oklahoma football would let Tulane get into an offensive grove behind a quick passing game and an excellent 4th down conversion rate. After his third fumble of the game, Michael Pratt was 16 for 27 with 163 yards and three touchdowns.

On the offensive side, Oklahoma’s lack of ability to sustain drives in the second half is why this game got as close as it did. The last five drives for Oklahoma’s offense went as follows:

  • Turnover on downs
  • Field Goal
  • Interception
  • Missed FG
  • End of Game

Only one of these drives lasted for more than three and a half minutes. This allowed Tulane to build up more possessions and keep Oklahoma’s defense on the field.

While we are focusing on what Oklahoma did wrong here, it is very important to give credit to Tulane as they battled strongly from start to finish. They came with two minutes of upsetting the No. 2 team in the country despite three turnovers.

The rest of the AAC should take note of this game as the Green Wave look to build on this performance.
