2. Tyler Allgeier remains BYU’s best backfield threat

For an offense that lost so much production in 2021, the running game is in fairly good shape. Lopini Katoa had limited opportunity to make noise, as he ran nine times for 33 yards and also hauled in a four-yard reception.

But Katoa was largely relegated to a backup role, as Tyler Allgeier took charge and showed that he remains the best option running the ball for BYU this year.

Against an Arizona defense that returned more than three-quarters of last year’s production but ranked 77th against the run last year, Allgeier had a field day. After busting off 1,150 yards and 13 touchdowns in a shortened 2020 season, Allgeier picked up right where he left off in the new season.

Allgeier gashed the Arizona defense for 94 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries, opening up space for Jaren Hall to throw the ball. His greatest contributions were on the ground, though he proved dangerous in the passing game and even with his arm.
