13. Northwestern, 0-1: No team in college football lost more from their roster last season than the Northwestern Wildcats, including losing two first-round draft picks for the first time in program history.

Those losses left the Wildcats with a depleted roster. That was evident, especially on defense, against the Michigan State Spartans in their 38-21 loss. The defense gave up 264 yards to Kenneth Walker III in his Spartans’ debut.

Quarterback Hunter Johnson did play well, but the defense did not, and Johnson does not have the personnel to throw the ball downfield when they play better secondaries.

12. Indiana, 0-1: The Hoosiers opening game could not have gone any worse. Michael Penix was dreadful, completing less than 50 percent of his passes, throwing three interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns. Penix had one interception called back for roughing.

Iowa was not spectacular offensively, but that did not matter because the Hoosier could not get anything going offensively, accumulating just 233 total yards. Defensively, Indiana did play well, surrendering only 17 offensive points.

Tyler Goodson had 99 yards rushing, but 56 of those yards came on one play. Take away the long touchdown run, and Goodson had just 43 yards on 18 carries. It does not matter how well the Hoosier defense plays; IU needs to generate points offensively.
