2. Notre Dame will play hot hand at QB for rest of season

After last week’s game people (myself included) were saying that Jack Coan might very well be in the Heisman race. Fast forward one week and Tyler Buchner was out there helping lead Notre Dame in two crucial drives that led to touchdowns.

It was expected that the talented freshman Buchner would play and get some snaps for Notre Dame, but not sure anybody expected it to be in so early in game on Saturday.

Coan still had an OK game, in my opinion, for Notre Dame. He just had one bad throw he wishes he could have got back before the half which resulted in a pick-six for Toledo. Coan finished the day going completing 21 passes for 239 yards, two touchdown passes, one fumble, and the one interception. The graduate transfer helped lead the Irish down the field to score the game-winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

You have to give Coan a lot of credit as it appeared on the game-winning drive he dislocated his finger. He ran over to the sideline and got it popped back into place like it was nothing and came back out and threw the game-winner to tight end Michael Mayer.

Coan and Buchner offer completely different styles under center. Coan is more of a pocket passer with a better arm overall right now. While Buchner is a dual-threat with the ability to make plays and scramble using his legs.

Maybe Brian Kelly and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees use a two-quarterback system and go with more of the hot hand depending on the scenario of that current game.

My hunch is that Notre Dame still rolls with Coan at starter but you will see drives where Buchner come into either spark the Irish offense or try to the ground game moving better like he did on Saturday against Toledo.
