Ohio State Football: 3 hot takes from heartbreaking loss to Oregon
1. Ohio State is most likely out of the playoff
Yes, it is only Week 2, but one team that many had penciled to go undefeated is out of the playoff race — for now at least.
This game being at Ohio State, Oregon being without star defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux, and how the Ducks played in their opener were some reasons why many felt this game was not going to be very close. Vegas did not think it would be close either as it was a -14.5 spread for the Buckeyes on WynnBET.
But guess what? You still have to go out there and play the game.
Oregon went out there and played the game better and might have knocked the Buckeyes out of the playoff when it’s all said and done in a few months.
Ohio State now will need some help from teams ahead of them to go down the rest of the season and win out the rest of the way on its end. The door is not completely shut for the Buckeyes as they still have some slim chances to get back into the playoff competition.
What really hurts Ohio State is that they only have one ranked team left on their schedule right now in Penn State. Ohio State does not play the likes of Iowa or Wisconsin in the regular season which hurts its chances of securing big-time wins this year in league play.
One team that now has a huge edge over Ohio State is Oregon. If Oregon were to lose one game conference game and find themselves being compared to Ohio State down the road you have to give the Ducks the edge since they won the head-to-head matchup.
This loss to Oregon will most likely knock Ohio State out of making the playoff. When you think about the playoffs it’s hard not to think of Ohio State being there.
It’s college football so anything can happen, but this loss to Ohio State will probably be the loss we look back on that keeps them out of the playoff in 2022.
