MEAC Football Week 2 recap: Results, top performers, team of the week

Norfolk State 16, Wake Forest 41

The Norfolk State Spartans put up a better performance than they did against Toledo last week but still lose to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

The Spartans offense played very well tallying 336 yards of total offense outdoing their 275 yards against Toledo.

Norfolk State was only forced into a three-and-out twice in the game the same amount of times the Spartans’ defense forced a three-and-out as well.

Next game: Sept. 18 vs. Elizabeth City State

Morgan State 20, Tulane 69

Coming off a shutout loss to the Towson Tigers in the “Battle of the Greater Baltimore,” Morgan State puts up a better effort in week two in a loss to Tulane.

All three of Morgan State’s touchdowns came in each of their three red zone attempts.

The Bears recorded 184 passing yards against Tulane which outdid their 142 yards of total offense in their matchup against Towson.

They did, however, commit three turnovers against Tulane including two interceptions more turnovers than they did last week.

Next game: Sept. 18 at Sacred Heart 

Delaware State 14, Georgetown 20

In the closest game of the weekend in the MEAC, the Delaware State Hornets came up short of winning their second straight game losing to the Georgetown Hoyas in overtime.

Delaware State scored each of their two touchdowns in the second quarter holding a 14-0 lead before the Hoyas went on to comeback and win.

The Hornets defense played excellently with the Hoyas only totaling 48 rushing yards in the game compared to the Delaware State’s 136 rushing yards.

Delaware State had a chance to win the game in overtime with a 37-yard field goal but it was blocked.

Next game: Sept 18 at East Tennessee State

South Carolina State 3, Clemson 49

The South Carolina Bulldogs had the toughest task of all the MEAC teams in week two going up against the fifth-ranked team in the FBS, the Clemson Tigers.

The Bulldogs defense put up a solid effort forcing three Clemson turnovers including two interceptions.

South Carolina State’s best drive in the game came in the third quarter continuing into the fourth in which they gained 71 yards on 12 plays but were unable to convert it to points.

Next game: Sept. 18 at New Mexico State

North Carolina Central 10, Marshall 44

Coming off an upset win over the Alcorn State Braves in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge, the North Carolina Central Eagles were unable to play spoiler losing on the road against the Marshall Thundering Herd.

Penalties were a problem for both teams as North Carolina Central recorded 13 in the game while Marshall had 10.

The Eagles did a solid job stopping the Thundering Herd in the red zone prevent three scores out of nine attempts.

Next game: Sept. 18 vs Winston-Salem State

Howard 0, Maryland 62

For the second straight season, the Howard Bison were shut out by the Maryland Terrapins losing by a combined score of 141-0.

The difference between this game and their last meeting in 2019 is Howard was able to move the ball on the Terrapins’ defense much better.

In 2019, the Bison only recorded four first downs while in their matchup on Saturday they recorded eight.

Next game: Sept. 18 vs. Hampton
