College Football 2021: 3 teams that will be on upset alert in Week 3
Miami (vs. Michigan State)
Miami hasn’t quite been the team most expected to start the season. They were barely competitive against Alabama and barely escaped an App State upset bid last week. Michigan State, on the other hand, has arguably been better that most have expected, especially offensively. Mel Tucker has his Spartans looking good earlier and a big win at Miami would be big to help the confidence of a team that needs it heading into Big Ten play.
Notre Dame (vs. Purdue)
Notre Dame has had some problems defensively to start the year. Playing a Jeff Brohm offense might not be exactly what they want to see. Brohm, once one of the hot coaching names in college football, is looking to right the ship that has fallen off since his first season. Purdue can exploit Notre Dame’s run defense and that is where the upset could come from. At least Notre Dame quarterback Jack Coan is familiar with his former Big Ten West rival.
Arkansas (vs. Georgia Southern)
Arkansas is undoubtedly on the right path following its huge win against Texas. But can they continue the momentum or is the pressure to win too much? Georgia Southern’s triple option offense is tricky, something Arkansas hasn’t seen in a long time. Arkansas might not win the time of possession battle given how the Eagles’ offense operates, so they’ll have to make the most of their opportunities.
Colorado (vs. Minnesota)
Even after last week, I’m still a believer in Minnesota. They struggled against Miami (OH) while Colorado was within three minutes of defeating Texas A&M. It’s admittedly hard to see why an upset is possible here, but at some point this season Minnesota is going to shock someone they shouldn’t. This won’t necessarily be a shock given how the Gophers gave Ohio State a run for about half the game, but everything does appear to be leaning the way of Colorado.
ULM (vs. Jackson State)
Deion Sanders. That’s it. It’s incredibly rare to see an FBS/FCS contest here, but Coach Prime’s 2-0 Tigers are about to face one of the worst teams in the FBS. ULM is 0-1 with a 45-10 loss to Kentucky. The Warhawks went 0-10 last year, with only one game within two touchdowns and all but three losses were by 20 points or more. This could be a long, embarrassing night for ULM.
