Best teams to never make CFB Playoffs: 6. Wisconsin, 2017

There’s nothing better than holding destiny in your own hands. It’s also a bit unsettling.

As the 2017 college football season unfolded, the Wisconsin Badgers were clearly one of the best teams in the nation. For the vast majority of the season, they destroyed everyone who stepped on the turf against them. Number 25 Iowa was handed a 24 point beating and even number 19 Michigan lost by 14 points.

After handing Minnesota a 31 point loss, Wisconsin jumped all the way up to number 3 on the latest College Football Playoff ranking. The game plan was simple, take care of number 8 Ohio State, then wrap up the year by destroying number 11 Miami. The latter proved to be a relative cakewalk but the former derailed everything.

Ohio State handed Wisconsin its first and only loss of the season and effectively ended any chance they had of making the College Football Playoffs. Although they failed to make an appearance on the big stage, that Wisconsin team was ridiculous on defense. Wisconsin allowed the third fewest points per game that year with 13.2. They were also the only team in the nation to rank both in the top five defensively in stopping the rush and limiting yards through the air.

Could they have ultimately taken down the likes of Clemson and Alabama that season? We strongly believe so.
