Best teams to never make CFB Playoffs: 10. Texas A&M, 2020

Technically, Texas A&M shouldn’t even be here. A slot in the College Football Playoff essentially fell right into their lap after watching Notre Dame get absolutely destroyed by Clemson in the ACC Championship Game.

Under normal circumstances, a loss, especially one that occurs by 24 points at the end of the season, is more than enough to knock a team off its high horse. Yet, with Notre Dame actually beating Clemson earlier in the year, albeit without quarterback Trevor Lawrence, the committee handed the Irish a lifeline so to speak.

As A&M stood on pins and needles, hoping and praying that their names would be called, they were left both speechless and apoplectic when they were forced to settle for the fifth spot and an outside seat at the 2020 College Football Playoff.

A&M didn’t offer much offensively with quarterback Kellen Mond but defensively, they could compete with anyone. They ranked 10th in opposing team’s yards per game with 317.3 and second in stopping the run with 92 rushing yards allowed.

Considering that Notre Dame did what they always do, meaning, get annihilated in a big-time game, A&M should have been given their chance. Notre Dame barely beat a clearly wobbled Clemson squad earlier in the year and was throttled once they were at full strength. Notre Dame simply didn’t deserve to be there.
