Big 12 Football Power Rankings, Week 4: Kansas State takes a big leap
Record in last 5 games: 3-2
Total offense conference rank: No. 6
Total defense conference rank: No. 6
Best win: vs. Virginia Tech (27-21)
This was a massive win for West Virginia, as they took care of business against a top 15 team at home. Leddie Brown led the way with 196 total yards and a touchdown against the Hokies. He now has five touchdowns through the first three games.
The Mountaineers also have the distinction of being the only Big 12 team thus far to take on two opponents from Power Five schools.
Strength of schedule is why West Virginia sits ahead of Texas and it is also why they will be better prepared for their showdown in Norman this weekend. While it doesn’t guarantee a win, facing top-tier competition won’t catch the Mountaineers off guard.
Next Game: at No. 4 Oklahoma
Record in last 5 games: 3-2
Total offense conference rank: No. 1
Total defense conference rank: No. 2
Best win: at Kansas (45-7)
Baylor has been a fun team to watch early on in the season. When we talk about the strength of schedule, Baylor is the biggest offender of the conference. The three opponents Baylor has faced off against have a combined record of 2-6.
With that said, it is time to invoke the “you can only play who’s on your schedule” saying. Because the Bears have played outstanding football in the early stages of the year.
They have allowed just two touchdowns in the past two weeks and Abram Smith ripped off his third 100-plus yard rushing game of the year against Kansas.
It took Gerry Bohanon all four years at Baylor for him to be named starting quarterback and he has made the most of his first opportunity. Bohanon has eight total touchdowns on the year and has yet to turn over the ball.
Baylor can be a real scary team if they play this brand of football all year long. Their first legitimate test comes this weekend when Iowa State visits.
Next Game: vs. No. 14 Iowa State
