1. UTSA

UTSA football has only been around since 2011, making it one of the youngest programs in all of college football. They currently play in the enormous 64,000 seat Alamodome in San Antonio for Conference USA.

The Roadrunners have had phenomenal success in the decade they’ve been playing football. They’ve had five seasons in which they’ve won six or more games and they are well on their way to a sixth since they are 4-0 to start the 2021 college football season.

UTSA has been to two bowl games and have even produced some top-level NFL talent. Defensive end Marcus Davenport was drafted 14th overall by New Orleans in the 2018 NFL Draft.

They’ve earned wins against bigger schools such as Baylor, Memphis, and Houston in recent years, showing they have what it takes to compete in a higher-level conference.

The Roadrunners play in the 7th largest city in the United States and would be a fairly comparable replacement for the departing Houston.

2. Appalachian State

The Mountaineers of Appalachian State should be under consideration from the AAC to replenish their roster of teams. Currently, in the Sun Belt, Appalachian State has an all-time record of 122-77-5, which makes them one of the most successful Group of Five teams.

They have been to six bowl games and are undefeated in those bowl games. Appalachian State has been ranked in the AP Top 25 three times in the last four seasons, reaching as high as 19th in the 2019 season.

The Mountaineers also develop players really well, evident by their nine former players who are currently on NFL rosters.

Kidd Brewer Stadium, where Appalachian State plays their games, is perfectly sized for AAC football games with a seating capacity of around 30,000.
